Little Man, Lady Killer

My Nephew Rowan

To my nephew Rowan,

I met you once before you were born.  I'm not gonna lie.  You looked like an alien.  But don’t worry, your mommy once told me that I was from Mars, so you're not alone.  I remember seeing your little webbed toes on the ultrasound machine and looking forward to the day when I'd get to introduce you to This Little Piggy.  And that one.

 Alien Baby

Before you were born, I learned a lot about you.  I attended baby class with your mom and went undercover auntie as your second mommy.  We sat with lots of other mommies and daddies and learned how to feed you and take care of you.  We practiced with an anatomically correct doll.  This doll also looked like an alien.

Your mommy was pretty anxious to meet you in person, but you didn’t want to come out.  So the doctors were going to give your mommy some medicine at midnight on February 3, 2012 to make you come out.  You were not down with this.  One hour before midnight, you decided it was time to make your way into the world.  Your mommy’s water broke, and we all rushed to the hospital.

The waiting room was full of people waiting to meet you.  Fifteen of us to be exact.  Your grandparents Mommy Lynda, Johnny, David, Carla, and Jane.  Your aunties Kyrsti, Katie, and me.  Your cousin Whitney.  Your uncle Sean.  Brook and Lydia.  Jed and Karina.  Your godfather Josh.

When I finally met you, you definitely looked like an alien.  But cuter.  You were taller than any baby the nurses had ever seen.  And you were so calm, as if you had been preparing for this moment for the past 9 months.  I remember feeling your little hand wrap around my finger for the first time.  I know this little hand shake was just a primitive reflex, but I like to imagine this was your way of saying, "Nice to meet you, Auntie Alyx."

Now you are 11 weeks old, and you are starting to look less like an alien and more like a real boy.  You sing and smile when I talk to you.  You're always so busy taking in the world around you.  You're definitely way taller than all the other babies, and you change in some amazing way every time I see you.

Little Man, Lady Killer

I'm completely in love with you, Little Man.   Just know that I'm always here for you.  I will spoil you rotten, let you eat candy before bed, and stay up late watching scary movies with you.  And then I will chase away any monsters hiding under your bed and leave a nightlight on for you.  Just as long as you always refer to me as your cool auntie, though your other aunties are pretty dope too.  I think you're going to like this world a lot.

Love Always,
Auntie Alyx
