Things I'll Tell You When You're Older

Maybe it's a little early to be giving my nephew advice, especially since he's not even born yet. But in the midst of planning my big sister's baby shower, I've written down a few things I don't want to forget to tell him...

Don’t settle in love or in life. If it smells funny, throw it out. If it smells nice, keep it. Trust your nose on this one. Love can make us blind.

If you make a mistake, don’t beat yourself up. Learn from your mistakes and use them to become a better person. Nobody is perfect.

Find your happy place. No... NOT Disneyland. I mean a place you can go inside your head for quiet and reflection. It's good to think about stuff, but not too much.

Happy Place

Friends are blessings. You may not always hear them, but they’re usually right. They see things about you that you can’t see. Friends just make everything better.

Family is your rock.

When you feel lost, mom will remind you that you are smart, creative, compassionate, and handsome. She will also remind you that at least you have your health.

When you feel defeated, Dad will tell you that you are a winner no matter what. Then he will give you the kind of hug that only dads can give.

And Auntie will tell you all of the above and more. I can't wait to meet you and watch you grow up.
